With the release of the 2nd key visual for the movie of Ano Hana (above) from its official website, the release date for theatrical film has been announced for late August this year.
Slated for a release on the 31st of August 2013 in Japan, the movie of Ano Hana will be a retelling of the original TV series in Menma’s point of view directed by Tatsuyuki Nagai, who also directed the original TV series. A short promotional spot for the film had been released last year featuring early storyboard production sketches of a few scenes in the movie.
Four types of ticket batches for the film have been released in advance of the movie’s release; a night festival version, a Christmas version, a New Year’s day temple visit version and a flower viewing version, each coming with a bonus bromide.
Night Festival Version
This version was released at the Chichibu yo festival from the 1st-3rd of December 2012 for 1,500 yen.
The Christmas version was sold at the Jump festival from the 22nd-23rd of December 2012 at Makuhari Messe, also for 1,500 yen. There was also a campaign where buyers would receive special Ano Hana carry bag if they bought the ticket along with Jintan’s T-shirt for 4,500 yen.
A bookmark set was also sold at the festival for 3,000 yen.
New Year’s Day Temple Visit Version
Released on the 29th of December 2012, this version was sold at Comiket 83 in Noitamina’s shop booth for 1,500 yen. A special set was also available where a B2-size poster calendar and illustration card was included for 2,500 yen.
Flower Viewing Version
The latest version of the movie tickets will be released on the 30th of March 2013 at the Anime Contents Expo in Noitamina’s shop again for 1,500 yen. Another special set will also be available for purchase for 3,000 yen that includes a desktop calendar.
So with the movie not out until the 3rd quarter of 2013, I won’t expect the Japanese DVD/BD home video release to be out until early 2014, since there’s usually a 6 month period gap between the theatrical release to the home video release in Japan. However, Aniplex may surprise us and release it in time for Christmas this year since they’ve done it before for the 7th Kara no Kyoukai movie’s LE DVD release a few years ago. Either way, I’ll most likely be importing the LE BD when it gets solicited.
On a final note, what do you readers think about the movie being a retelling of the TV series in Menma’s POV? I’d like to know your thoughts.
